NEWAL Election Update [No Comments]

At the Oct. 26, 2003 Union Meeting, candidates were selected for all elective offices in the NEWAL of the APWU. Nominations were also made for next year’s two conventions, the State and the ABA and National Convention. All candidates for elective office are unopposed, have been declared the winners and will not appear on the ballot.

Voluntary Early Retirement: Judge to Rule in Two Weeks on Union Petition to Compel Arbitration

Federal District Judge Reggie B. Walton said he will issue a ruling within two weeks on the union’s petition to compel the Postal Service to go arbitration expeditiously over disputes regarding voluntary early retirement. Judge Walton made the announcement after hearing oral arguments in Washington, DC on Oct. 23.

Stand-Up Talk All Employees [No Comments]

Stand-Up Talk All Employees Last week, an employee at the Greenville, SC, Airport Mail Facility discovered a suspicious envelope. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested its contents and found that it contained a poison called ricin (RICE-in). Additional tests will be conducted so we can be absolutely sure about the envelope's contents. The ricin was contained in a sealed, watertight metal container inside the envelope.

For some time, the APWU has been pursuing a resolution of the issue of wearing gloves on automated equipment. However, we were unable to reach a resolution over this issue with the Postal Service.

USPS Allows Districts to Disapprove Early Outs

The Postal Service is imposing limits on the number of employees it will release for voluntary early retirement, in clear violation of its Collective Bargaining Agreement with the APWU. The agreement, ratified in December 2002, required management to seek authority from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to offer early retirement to “all eligible APWU-represented employees.”

WE WON THE OVERTIME VOTE! [No Comments]

On Thursday, October 2, the House of Representatives voted 221 to 203 (with 11 not voting) to instruct its members on the conference committee for H.R. 2660 to go along with the Senate version of the bill that bans the Administration from taking away the right to overtime from workers who are currently eligible. (H.R. 2660 is the appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education; the provision to protect overtime was a Senate amendment to that bill.)
